Building Law & Compliance
The Building Act 2004 is the governing piece of legislation. It is overseen by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (Building and Housing Group) - known as MBIE. It is administered and enforced by over 60 Territorial Authorities who have jurisdiction in their local district.
The Building Act mainly applies to the physical aspects of building work. Other laws govern the way people use and manage buildings.
